Description: A comedic valentine to the theater For the Cavendishes, the "Royal Family" of Broadway, the show must go on. Set in 1920s Manhattan, this American classic (loosely based on the legendary Barrymore family) centers on three generations of actors, each at different stages in their careers. From an aging grande dame to a promising ingénue, together they confront a choice between secure, yet dull domesticity and an erratic, egocentric yet potentially fulfilling life on the stage. A brilliant, fast-paced comedy, The Royal Family is a masterfully written love letter to the Great White Way.

Lines are drawn, crossed, and double-crossed in this raw, powerful and often hilarious story about loyalty, love and the crippling power of unbending principles. New York playwright Joe Roland will be in residency at NHCC during the rehearsal process to workshop and adapt the play with the cast and crew, and to moderate talk backs after all performances. Suddenly, the difference between the haves and the have nots—those with stars and those without—isn’t so clear. What will the Sneetches do now? Description:We Are Proud to Present a Presentation About the Herero of Namibia, Formerly Known as Southwest Africa, From the German Sudwestafrika, Between the Years 1884-1915 Going off-script can sometimes be the best way to tell a story. We Are Proud to Present follows an ensemble of American actors -- three black and three white – as they rehearse a stage presentation about a genocide in 1900s colonial Africa. Questions arise when they realize that summarizing the event doesn’t do justice to the people it affected, and while they struggle to understand both sides, they make connections between the past they are portraying and the issues confronting them in the present. Equal parts comedy and drama, We Are Proud to Present sparks powerful conversations about race, nationality, ethics, exploitation and sovereignty, while exposing the issues both in humorous moments of failed communication and striking moments with haunting artistic discoveries. Part of the Level Nine Series, devoted to community dialogue about today’s most significant topics and questions.
