Herself a target of the McCarthy era blacklisting of Hollywood and Broadway artists, to Hellman this was a play about the evil power of slander.

Description: Based on Toni Morrison’s first novel, The Bluest Eye is a heartrending coming-of-age story about a young black girl in 1940s Ohio. Pecola Breedlove wants nothing more than to be loved, but she’s only met with ridicule and abuse. Confronting turmoil at home, she prays for Shirley Temple’s blue eyes, believing their beauty is the only thing standing between her and the happiness of the white girls at school. By turns beautiful and harrowing, this powerful adaptation explores the destructive power of a racist society and the strength of a community attempting to embrace an era of change.

Description: Opal Kronkie, a middle-aged recluse, lives in a tumbledown mansion at the edge of the municipal dump. The general disarray of her establishment is aggravated by the fact that Opal collects things. Opal is also an optimist, for no matter how mean her lot- or her “friends- Opal responds with unfailing kindness and an abiding faith in the goodness of human nature. Into her rather strange world comes three purveyors of bogus perfume on the lam from the authorities. Opal’s menage is the perfect hideout- and Opal, herself, might be the remedy for their shattered finances. They decide that what she needs is plenty of insurance, a rapid demise, and three beneficiaries. Attempted murder wouldn’t seem to be funny, but in Mr. Patrick’s magic hands it is uproarious. Through it all, Opal radiates kindness, affection, and strangely enough, gratitude.

Description: 1967: a new political identity called Asian American emerges and a young literary hippie named Frank essays an inscrutable Chinese detective. A harmless sing-song orientalist minstrel show that ends in a grotesque carnival of murder! At once both comedic and political, Lloyd Suh's play within a play delves into the history and politics of yellowface with a keen eye, dark humor and sharp wit. The New York Times called it, “a metatheatrical polemic about the way Asian-Americans have been characterized and caricatured in popular culture.” Charles Francis Chan Jr.’s Exotic Oriental Murder Mystery was featured in Mu Performing Arts' 2016 New Eyes Festival at The Playwrights Center. Mu celebrates its 25th Anniversary Season this year. This production is recommended for age 14 and up. Part of the Level Nine Series, devoted to community dialogue about today's most significant topics and questions.
